The wine sector is worth 11 billion euros, has 2,000 industrial companies and with 50.4 million hectoliters Italy is confirmed as the world’s leading producer for the fourth consecutive year.
Overall, 2018 production was abundant, 10.5% more than last year, and ensured our country a 17% slice of all the wine produced in the world.
In particular, the production of Dop wine increased: + 21.7% compared to 2017, with the reds growing by 23.4% and the whites by 20.5%. With 523 certified products, Italy also holds the world record for IG (DOP and IGP) certified wines, with France only second at 435.
On the export front, Italy holds a 19.8% share of the world total, with 6.2 billion euros collected in 2018.
The US remains the leading market, followed by Germany and the United Kingdom. These 3 markets together absorb more than half of global Italian exports. In 2020, the markets the most interesting for Italian exports of still wines will be China, where sales volumes are expected to increase by 11.9%, Canada (+ 6.5%) and Japan (+ 4.2%); while for sparkling wines the main destinations will be Canada (+ 18.4%), USA (+ 14.6%) and China (+ 12.2%).
